Why I need a handicap...

When I joined the EWGA a few years ago, I
didn't really understand why I needed a handicap. I didn't
play in tournaments, and EWGA events (aside from the chapter
championship) didn't require one. So I often asked myself
"Why do I need a handicap?"
The answer is simple. By establishing a
handicap, you can track the progress of your golf game, see
how your scores improve over time, play in non-EWGA events,
substitute in non-EWGA leagues and see concrete evidence of
your improvement. The EWGA offers two ways to establish a
handicap.
•
Get a handicap through the Idaho Golf
Association (IGA) by filling out a handicap application form
available on the EWGA Boise/Treasure Valley website and
sending in $30.00. The IGA handicap allows you to
participate in IGA events and is accepted by all local
courses. The application form is on the website under
Events, or,
• Use the free handicap
service provided by EWGA headquarters on their website,
members only section. The EWGA Golf Management System also
allows you to track all of your statistics (such as
fairways, green in regulation, putts, etc.) and, therefore
provides a unique and valuable tool for tracking progress in
all areas of your golf game.

Whether you are a newer golfer or someone
who has played the game for years, if you don't have a
handicap, consider establishing one. You will never find a
better tool for measuring your progress and you might just
be surprised at how much you enjoy watching that number
drop.
